Troubled US singer arrested in custody row over son (5)
American country singer Mindy McCready has been arrested for violating the terms of a custody ruling after being discovered hiding in a wardrobe with her young son.
Ms McCready (36) was found with Zander (5) in an Arkansas summer house, following a three-day police search. Zander was taken into care and is set to be returned to Ms McCready's mother, his legal guardian.
The singer (below), who rose to fame in the 1990s when her debut album 'Ten Thousand Angels' sold two million copies, may now face criminal charges for breaking court orders by taking her son.
She is accused of seizing him from her father's house in Florida during a scheduled visit last week. His father, Bill McKnight, filed a missing person's report after she failed to bring Zander home.
Ms McCready, who is heavily pregnant with twins, has suffered severe depression and tried to kill herself in 2008. She served a prison sentence and was beaten close to death by Mr McKnight in 2005.
The four albums she released following her success as a teen star were not so successful and her career has played out primarily in tabloid gossip columns over the past decade.
Before being found, Ms McCready said in an email: "I'm doing all this to protect Zander, not stay out of trouble. I don't think I should be in trouble for protecting my son."
Gayle Inge, her mother, said: "I'm real excited that he's safe . . . We feel for Mindy and we feel for Zander. I want to wrap my arms around her and tell her that I love her." (© Daily Telegraph, London)
