Tortoise found 30 years after it went missing

A PET tortoise has been found more than 30 years after it went missing, its owners believe.

The pet, Manuela, was last seen by the Almeida family in 1982 during work on their home in Rio de Janeiro. They searched the area but failed to find it.

When the father of the family, Leonel Almeida, died earlier this month, his children cleared out his locked storeroom. One son was about to throw out a box, when the tortoise emerged.

Lenita Almeida said: "We're all thrilled to have Manuela back."

Experts think the tortoise may have survived by eating termites. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
