A porcupine gave a nasty surprise to three dogs in Canada, leaving them with spines all over their bodies.

The animals all survived, but their owner was hit with a large vet's bill.

One of the dogs, Mahalo, came out of the encounter with particularly serious injuries, having been punctured by spines in her heart and lungs.

She required extensive surgery, leaving her owner with a bill thought to be around €7,000.

Mike Gerrand set up a GoFundMe page on behalf of the pets' owner to help pay for the treatment.

The other dogs, Nestah and Soljah, also got hurt by the porcupine's quills, with Nestah requiring medical treatment for spikes to her face.

Mr Gerrand said: "These dogs are the love of my dear friend Dennis' life."

The veterinarian said if [Mahalo] hadn't been a pit bull with all that muscle she wouldn't have survived," he added.

The GoFundMe page had raised almost $8,345 by Tuesday. The target was $10,000.
