Sea lion hitches a ride on family's kayak
A family out for a kayak trip picked up an unexpected hitchhiker, a sea lion pup that hopped on for a 20-minute ride.
The California family were enjoying a sunny day on the water when the pup decided to climb abroad.
"At first it felt like he was pushing the kayak. We felt him back there," Rodney Gist told a local television station. "Next thing you know, I could tell he had climbed aboard."
The dad-of-three was accompanied by his 10-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son, while his wife and 8-year-old daughter were paddling nearby.
A crowd gathers to watch the sea lion on the kayak, and at one point the tiny pups nuzzles against Gist in what he said was a "really sweet" manner.
"About five, 10 minutes in, I was able to touch him and pet him. He was able to put his head up under my arm, trying to get in my lap," Gist.
It is believed that the pup approached the family looking for food as a decline in the area's fish stocks has lead to a surge of sea lion sightings inear-shore waters and on beaches.
