Reddit sends pizza to two-year old cancer patient
Hazel Hammersly and her mother Lauren never expected the reaction they got when they posted a sign saying "send pizza" in the window of Hazel's hospital room.
Hazel, 2, is currently in treatment at the Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles after being diagnosed with a stage 3 neuroblastoma in April. Her mother, Lauren, started a blog called 'Our little Hazelnut', where she posted pictures of the two of them creating the sign, which she said was in an effort to "raise spirits around the cancer ward".
After a passerby took a photograph and posted it to Reddit, the hospital was inundated with pizza from generous Redditors, wanting to help Hazel feel better. Lauren posted on her blog that over 20 boxes had been delivered that morning with more still arriving.
According to Lauren's blog, where she also posted pictures;
"Hazel woke up from her nap to the smell of pizza and was so excited to chow down! Several other children and nurses came into the room, with music playing, and had themselves a wonderful Pizza Party. As of yesterday evening, there was more than 20 boxes delivered and more was coming!"
Hazel was sent so much pizza that the hospital had to release a statement thanking people for the pizza, but asking them politely to stop, as it had "gotten out of hand".
Hazel's mother Lauren went back to the Reddit thread to thank everyone for their generosity and ask that no more pizza be delivered, by request of the hospital.
The family have a donation page to help pay for Hazel's treatment, which they have asked any further donations to go to.
