And the Oscars will go to . . . Matthew McConaughey, Sandra Bullock, Jared Leto, Lupita Nyong'o and Alfonso Cuaron.

So says New York-based psychic medium Thomas John, a cult favourite with the shiney set after he correctly predicted an actress dressed in white (Jennifer Lawrence) would trip on her way up to the podium last year. John, who also predicts 12 Years A Slave will take best picture at tonight's ceremony, doesn't foresee any hurdles in Lawrence's sartorial path this year but he is warning of a serious style snafu for a woman in a red dress.

He also sees this year's fashion star Nyong'o decked out in print but couldn't say which designer will land the prize of dressing Miu Miu's new muse. Recent red-carpet hits have included jewel-coloured gowns by Ralph Lauren, Gucci and Dior.

Whether or not Sandra Bullock can pull off an upset and snatch the Best Actress award away from odds-on favourite Cate Blanchett, she has already hit gold with her Gravity role, which is expected to net her a glass-ceiling shattering $70m (€51m) pay cheque. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Bullock – who beat the likes of Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Blake Lively and Marion Cotillard for the part after Angelina Jolie dropped out – pocketed a $20m (€14m) signing on fee for the film.

She also received a "highly unusual" deal for 15 per cent of the box-office receipts, which have already surpassed $700m (€507m). On top of all that, Bullock will get an additional $20m from "home video, TV and ancillary revenue."

If she wins tonight, Bullock also stands to make Oscar history by delivering what could be the first acceptance speech when nobody nods off when she thanks her management team.
