Police have released the chilling recording of an emergency phonecall made by a grandfather just minutes after he shot seven members of his family, six of them children.

Convicted criminal Don Spirit (51) killed six of his grandchildren, his adult daughter and himself at his Florida home.

The crime has mystified police.

A recording of Spirit’s emergency phonecall, made just minutes after the shootings, has been released.

“Yes ma’am, I just shot my daughter and shot all my grandkids and I’ll be sitting on my step, so when you get here I’ll shoot myself,” Spirit tells the emergency dispatch.

“Every one of them is dead,” he adds.

Eager to keep him on the phone, the dispatch asks what kind of gun he has, to which he replies: “It doesn’t matter what kind of gun I have. “When you get here, I’ll shoot myself and then you can figure out what kind of gun it is.

“I don’t want to hear it, ma’am,” he continues when she asks another question.

“You don’t need to know every (bleep) thing out here that’s all. You got all of the kids dead in the house.

“Six kids, one adult. One of them is a baby.”

The recording ends as the female operator whispers, “I need help”.

The incident occurred in Bell, a small town in rural northern Florida.

Police would not say if the woman killed was the mother of any of the two boys and four girls present, some of whom spent a lot of time at the home.

The victims were named as Sarah Lorraine Spirit, 28; Kaleb Kuhlmann, 11; Kylie Kuhlmann, nine; Johnathon Kuhlmann, eight; Destiny Stewart, five; Brandon Stewart, four; and Alanna Stewart, who was born in June.
