Pfizer fined $2.3bn for mis-selling drug

Pfizer Inc has pled guilty to criminal violation for mis-selling its pain-killer drug Bextra.

It also has to pay $2.3 billion to settle allegations that it improperly marketed 13 other medicines.

It is the biggest ever settlement for a health care fraud case in the US and relates to Pfizer's promotion of drugs for unapproved uses in a practice known as "off-label".

Doctors are allowed prescribe medicines to treat ailments for which the drugs are not approved.

However, it is illegal for drugs companies to encourage the practice.
