Obama selects the write stuff for holiday

Toby Harnden

US PRESIDENT Barack Obama has picked up three weighty novels for his holiday reading -- one is sharply critical of the Iraq war and two other books reflect on relationships between a father and his family.

Those wishing to psychoanalyse Mr Obama will have plenty of material from his choices of 'Freedom' by Jonathan Franzen, 'Tinkers' by Paul Harding and 'A Few Corrections' by Brad Leithauser, all of which he picked up in Martha's Vineyard.

He also bought the classics 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee and 'The Red Pony' by John Steinbeck, apparently for his daughters Malia (12) and Sasha (9).

'Freedom', which has been acclaimed by reviewers on both sides of the Atlantic, is not yet on sale but the proprietors of the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore in Vineyard Haven gave Mr Obama their advance copy, much to the chagrin of Franzen fans. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
