New York mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner gets into slanging match with bakery heckler
A short video shows struggling New York mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner arguing with a man in a bakery whilst on the campaign trail.
The two-minute video shows Mr Weiner heading back into a bakery to confront a heckler while on the campaign trail in Brooklyn's Orthodox Jewish neighbourhood of Borough Park on Wednesday.
After hearing the man shout 'Scumbag' to his back, a visibly annoyed Mr Weiner, his mouth full of honey cake, turned around and yelled back at the man.
"Yeah?" he said. "It takes one to know one, jackass."
Mr Wiener, who resigned from Congress in 2011 after a sexting scandal, then confronted the man inside the bakery.
"You did disgusting things ... you have the nerve to even walk around in public," the heckler told the mayoral hopeful.
"Oh, yeah? And you're a perfect person? You're my judge?" Mr Weiner responded. "What rabbi taught you that?"
The unabashed ex-congressman later described the confrontation as simply an example of him putting a heckler in his place.
The Weiner campaign also released a longer version of the discussion, in which the bakery heckler can be heard accusing Mr Wiener of marrying an Arab, in an apparent reference to Weiner's Muslim wife, Huma Abedin, a longtime aide to former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton.
Mr Weiner, once a front-runner among the Democratic candidates for mayor, was in the neighborhood greeting voters ahead of the September 10 primary.
Support for his campaign has collapsed amid a new sexting scandal similar to the one that forced him to resign from Congress. Polls show Weiner is now a distant fourth among the Democratic candidates seeking to replace independent Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who's serving the last of three consecutive terms.
