A mysterious millionaire has been leaving envelopes containing hundred dollar bills around San Francisco's Bay Area before giving cryptic clues to their whereabouts to followers of a Twitter account.

So far, the anonymous donor is estimated to have given away more than $10,000 (€7,343).

Each time the millionaire hides an envelope, a tweet goes out from the address @HiddenCash with cryptic clues about the location.

In an interview with the Bold Italic website, @HiddenCash said: "I've made millions of dollars the last few years, more than I ever imagined, and yet many friends of mine, and people who work for me, cannot afford to buy a modest home in the Bay Area. I am determined to give away some of the money I make in fun, creative ways."

Recent hiding places include a key box at a yoga studio and an abandoned phone box. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
