A councillor caused outrage after she suggested homeless people should be culled by lethal injection.

Olga Gutierrez Machorro, who represents voters in Tecamachalco, a suburb of Mexico City, made the comment during a discussion on how to help the homeless and disadvantage in Mexico City.

“Yes they’re a little crazy, but they’re harmless. Which is why I think to myself wouldn’t it be kinder to just give them a lethal injection?” she said.

Her comments were recorded and published by local newspaper Cambio, which also claimed she said some homeless people were already being killed by authorities in the south-central Mexican state.

“[They’re] being taken to a psychiatric hospital before being left in the middle of a motorway to be run over,” the newspaper quoted the councillor as saying.

Her remarks came after she said the local government of Tecamachalco lacked the necessary resources to deal with an increasing number of beggars on the streets.

In a twist of irony, Ms Machorro is actually the chairman of the Commission for Vulnerable Groups for the council.

She has since apologised for the remarks, adding that she did not think the idea would create such outrage.
