Man who shared photo of dead wife's corpse on Facebook says he acted in self-defence
A man who shot his wife dead and shared a picture of her body on Facebook killed her in self-defence because he lived in fear of her drug use and Satan worship, his lawyer has said.
Lawyers for Derek Medina (33) said they will produce evidence to prove that 27-year-old Jennifer Alfonso was an avid user of Ecstasy, that she battered her husband and that she was deeply involved in Satan worship.
Jury selection began yesterday and Medina faces life in prison if convicted of Alfonso's killing at the couple’s Miami home.
Medina has been in custody since his arrest in 2013.
The case gained international attention when Medina posted a photo of his dead wife's body on Facebook and admitted that he killed her.
However in subsequent interviews with police he claimed he acted in self-defence.
His lawyer said Alfonso started the fight, during which she pursued Medina with a knife.
Medina then shot her.
During a preliminary trial hearing this week Medina’s lawyer argued:
"She initiated a confrontation. My client tried to calm her down."
The prosecution will attempt to cast doubt on the self-defence claim, with evidence that Medina was a skilled amateur boxer.
Other evidence produced by the District Attorney will show that Medina confided in a friend that he would kill Alfonso if she ever tried to leave him.
The trial is due to commence early next week.
