Man jumps to death at Hansard concert
A CALIFORNIA concert by Oscar winner Glen Hansard was thrown into chaos when a man killed himself by jumping on to the stage from a height, landing just a few feet from the singer.
Hansard was on stage with his band Swell Season when the man jumped from a roof in Saratoga, leaving behind a friend who had gone there with him.
The man landed a few feet from the singer.
Hansard walked over to the man for a few minutes but eventually left the stage along with his former partner Marketa Irglova, who is also in the band.
"The band, crew and all involved with them are shocked by the unfortunate events of last night. Their hearts go out to the victim and his family," a statement from the band said.
Fans said they initially thought the body was a dummy that had landed on the stage.
"But after seeing the horrible shock on Glen's face, we realised it was something very serious. The staff acted quickly and tried to resuscitate him, but to no avail," one eyewitness said.
Sgt Rick Sung, a spokesman for the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, said the man had left his seat at about 10pm local time on Thursday.
"Next thing his friend and everyone at the concert sees he's standing on top of the roof and dove on to the stage," Sgt Sung added.
