Man charged with in-flight sex assault on sleeping female passenger
A man who allegedly molested a female passenger during a flight, by rubbing lotion into her body as she slept, told an air hostess that the victim 'enjoyed it because she did not resist.'
The alleged assault took place during a 13-hour flight from Dubai to New York City operated by Emirates.
Following the incident a criminal complaint was filed by the female passenger in the U.S. District Court in Brooklyn.
The smokinggun.com website reports that NYPD detective, Christopher Caruso, said the female passenger fell asleep about an hour into the flight with the aid of anti-anxiety medication.
She was seated in row 45 beside a passenger called Nadeem Mehmood Quraishi (42), a resident of Staten Island.
After sleeping for several hours the woman awoke to Quraishi enquiring as to whether she had slept well.
She realised that moisturiser had been spread on her arms, legs and chest and that the hand lotion she had put in the seat pocket was missing.
The woman also saw that her underwear had been disturbed and that lotion had also been applied to that area of her body.
When she returned to her seat she asked Quraishi where her hand lotion was.
He handed it to her and she immediately alerted cabin crew.
One air hostess told investigators that 'the passenger was crying and trembling.'
Members of the crew then questioned Quraishi and he admitted to applying lotion to the woman's body as she slept.
Quraishi told them that he believed the woman 'needed it,' and that she 'enjoyed it because she did not resist.'
The alleged perpetrator also told the flight crew 'that he liked it and that it happened to him as a child,' Detective Caruso said.
When the plane landed at JFK Airport, Quraishi was questioned by law enforcement agents.
He admitted to 'inappropriately touching the passenger, that he knew it was wrong, but he did not specify how he touched the passenger,' Caruso said.
Quraishi appeared in a federal court in New York yesterday charged with the alleged in-flight sex assault.
The magistrate set his bail at $50,000 (€45,176).
He was ordered to surrender his passport and cannot leave New York City without permission.
Quraishi, who is manager of a Subway shop in Staten Island, was ordered to have no contact with the victim.
