A man who was caught urinating in the street accidentally shot himself in the groin while attempting to get rid of a gun he was carrying.

Javier Thomas (26) was caught by police relieving himself in a Brooklyn street in New York in the early hours of Saturday.

Noticing officers approaching him, the 26-year-old tried to toss his 9-mm Glock pistol under a nearby minivan.

Unfortunately for Mr Thomas, he accidentally pulled the trigger and shot himself in the privates.

He was taken to Kings County Hospital with a non-life threatening wound, and was later arrested on charges of weapon possession and reckless endangerment, police said.

The New York Police Department said its officers approached Thomas at 1:16 am because “he was apparently urinating in the street.”

“As the officers approached, they heard a gunshot and found Thomas had shot himself in the groin.”

Officers found a loaded handgun under the passenger tire of a minivan nearby.

They allege Thomas tossed it under the car after the accidental shooting.
