A man has been arrested after decapitating his girlfriend and her two dogs before mutilating himself.

A neighbour discovered the gruesome scene in the US city of Phoenix in Arizona.

It is understood the couple involved had a history of domestic violence and police had been called to the property on previous occasions.

The suspect, a 43-year-old man, had a history of mental health problems and had recently checked out of a mental health facility.

His neighbour went to the house to check on him after he had not heard from him in 24 hours.

The neighbour then discovered the horrific scene, after the suspect answered the door covered in blood.

He had chopped off his left arm from the elbow down and gouged out his right eye.

Police arrived at the scene shortly afterwards, to discover the decapitated bodies of a woman and two dogs inside the house.

The suspect told police at the scene he had killed three members of his family – however investigators believe he may have been referring to the two dogs as family members, as there was only one human victim inside the home.

The man remains in hospital recovering from his injuries, however it is expected he will survive.
