Killer's mother a 'gun-proud' prophet of doom

THE mother of the gunman who killed 20 children and seven adults in America's worst school massacre was a gun-proud 'survivalist' preparing for economic collapse, it has been revealed.

Nancy Lanza, whose gun collection was raided by her son Adam for his massacre at Sandy Hook school, was part of the 'prepper' movement – which urges readiness for social chaos by hoarding supplies and training with weapons, according to her sister-in-law.

"She prepared for the worst," Marsha Lanza told reporters on her doorstep in Illinois. "Last time we visited her in person, we talked about prepping – are you ready for what could happen down the line, when the economy collapses?"

Mrs Lanza was also reported to have been stockpiling food, as well as weapons, as a means of self-defence.

Police have revealed that the 52-year-old mother had five legally registered guns – including at least three which her 20-year-old son carried with him to the killings on Friday morning.

The revelation came as President Barack Obama arrived in Connecticut to comfort families of the victims and deliver remarks on the tragedy, amid mounting pressure for political action in Washington on gun control.

Democrats are preparing to introduce a new bill to ban assault rifles, however the difficulty of achieving any consensus on the issue was well illustrated after one Republican congressman yesterday said staff at the school should have been armed to protect themselves.

Lanza had rigged his semi-automatic rifle 'Rambo-style' with magazine cartridges taped together for maximum killing efficiency. He had also destroyed his computer's hard-drive to hinder investigators.

Lanza is reported to have wiped out one complete class of 14 five- and six-year-olds, along with their teacher.

Connecticut's chief medical examiner, Dr H Wayne Carver, said injuries were the worst he had ever seen, with some of the children shot 11 times.
