Rumours of Jay Z's infidelity have swirled for a long time and both he and Beyonce have hinted at it in their music.

Now, the rapper has finally come clean about cheating on his superstar wife of nine years.

In a wide-ranging interview with the 'New York Times' he talked about the challenges he has faced in his life, and admitted he didn't know how to handle them emotionally.

"You have to survive. So you go into survival mode, and when you go into survival mode what happens? You shut down all emotions. So even with women, you gonna shut down emotionally, so you can't connect.

"In my case, like it's, it's deep. And then all the things happen from there: infidelity..."

Beyonce appeared to allude to the infidelity in her album 'Lemonade', referring to the anonymous woman as "Becky with the good hair".

Jay Z also appeared to tackle the sensitive subject in his album '4.44', with lyrics such as "I apologise often womanise".

For both of them, he said, making music was "almost like a therapy session", and it made them "very, very uncomfortable".

"But the best place in the, you know, hurricane is like in the middle of it. We were sitting in the eye of that hurricane.

"And it was uncomfortable. And we had a lot of conversations. You know. [I was] really proud of the music she made, and she was really proud of the art I released. And, you know, at the end of the day we really have a healthy respect for one another's craft. I think she's amazing."

When asked about racism in Donald Trump's America, the rapper said it was good the issue was out in the open.

"The great thing about Donald Trump being president is now we're forced to have the dialogue," he said. "Now we're having the conversation on the large scale; he's provided the platform for us to have the conversation."
