'Grandma Betty' - the loveable 'Insta-granny' who gained over 678,000 followers during her cancer fight - has passed away.

Betty first went viral when her grandson posted some video clips of her to Instagram. In one, she wore boxing gloves and a red dressing gown beside a sign that read 'Kicking cancer's ass since 2013'. In another, she asked everyone to think positive and #Smile - which became her catchphrase.

Her grandson ran the account and Betty called her followers her 'online friends'. Followers sent her presents, cards and well-wishes through a PO box. She thanked them for their prayers.

Grandma Betty used Instagram to spread positive messages. "Love everybody and be good to everybody. That's the main thing".

Betty raised money for cancer research through sales of her t-shirt, which referenced her famous blue tongue.

Her grandson updated last night to say the family are missing Grandma Betty but they're happy she is now at peace.
