Four-year-old boy killed by falling tombstone in cemetery as family look on horrified
A FOUR-year-old Utah boy was crushed to death by a tombstone that fell on top of him in an historic cemetery at the weekend.
Little Carson Dean Cheney was with his dad who was taking photographs in the graveyard when the tragedy struck.
His father Zac Cheney was taking a portrait of another family in the historic cemetery, while his young son played nearby.
His grandmother Ger Gibbs told reporters that Carson was trying to make the family smile for the photo when the six foot tall headstone topped over onto him. The family had chosen the old cemetery for its historic location for their portrait.
Curtis Morley a family friend, said some of the children in the group were not enjoying having their photo taken and Carson tried to help out by pretending to be a leprechaun and make them laugh.
The four-year-old, who was due to start in playschool this year, played peek-a-boo and poked his head out from behind a tombstone which dated from the 1800s, when it fell down on top of him.
The boy’s grandmother said it took three men to lift the heavy slab off the boy’s body, and rescue teams did all they could to save the boy, who suffered trauma to his head and chest and stomach, but that he died a short time later in hospital.
"Carson passed away while trying to make others smile," according to Morley.
