Fort Hood suspect 'can be forcibly shaved' for trial

The army psychiatrist charged in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting rampage that killed 13 must be clean-shaven or will be forcibly shaved before his trial, a military judge ordered yesterday.

Col Gregory Gross issued the order after a hearing to determine whether a federal religious freedom law applied to Major Nidal Hasan's case. Beards are a violation of army regulations. Hasan (pictured) told the judge last week that he grew a beard because his Muslim faith requires it, not out of disrespect. His lawyers plan to appeal.
