US police have found a car they believe to have been involved in a crash at a creche in Florida that injured 15 people, including a dozen children.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office reported that Florida Highway Patrol troopers found a silver Dodge Durango in Winter Park, near Orlando.

Reports earlier said a Durango had smashed into another vehicle that then struck the KinderCare building. The Durango then left the scene.

Highway patrol spokeswoman Wanda Diaz said a silver or grayish Dodge Durango crashed into a vehicle that then struck the KinderCare building in Winter Park.

Several of the injured were reported to be in a "very serious condition", said Ms Diaz.

The injured included 13 people taken to hospitals and two treated at the scene, the Orange County Fire Rescue service said.

Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs called the crash an "absolute tragedy and disaster".

Local television footage showed several of the injured carried out on stretchers.
