Dismal defeat for 'sexting' NYC candidate
It was a suitably ignominious end to a political campaign that veered between shame and farce, writes Philip Sherwell.
Anthony Weiner, briefly the front-runner to become the next mayor of America's largest city, sneaked into his "victory party" in a New York bar through a back door while Sydney Leathers, his surgically enhanced internet "sexting" partner, waited to confront him at the front door.
And on his way out, in the last sorry image of his roller-coaster New York mayoral bid, he was captured on camera making an obscene gesture at a television news reporter.
The disgraced former congressman finished in a dismal fifth place, with less than 5pc of the vote in the Democratic primary campaign.
