Two bodies have been found in the search for a couple who had travelled to purchase a car after advertising on an American website.

Bud and June Runion left their home in Georgia last Thursday to view a 1966 Ford Mustang after they received a response to an ad placed on Craigslist.

Relatives of the middle-aged couple became concerned when the duo did not respond to calls or messages several hours after they set off on their drive.

The couple had been expected to babysit their daughter's children the Friday after they departed to meet the owner of the vehicle.

It would have taken the couple approximately three hours to travel from Marietta, Atlanta to McRae, Georgia where they had agreed to meet the man who was apparently selling the classic car.

An SUV belonging to the Runions was found submerged in a river close to where the agreed meeting location.

Two bodies, as yet unidentified, were later found in the same region.

A 28-year-man has been arrested on charges of fraud and theft by deception but police are not connecting him to the disappearance of the couple.

Investigations are continuing.

More to follow.
