A couple have been arrested after a video emerged of them encouraging a one-year-old child to play with a handgun.
The disturbing footage shows the baby playing with a .40 calibre handgun and the nineteen-year-old man telling the child to say ‘pow’.
Michael Barnes (19) and Toni Wilson (22), both from Indiana, face charges of child neglect, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and allowing a child to possess a firearm. Barnes is not the father of the toddler but has one-month-old twins with Wilson.
All three children have since been taken into care.
The video was discovered after police investigated Barnes’ mobile phone after he was arrested trying to sell a gun to an undercover officer on Friday.
Two videos on Barnes’ cellphone showed the baby tinkering with the handgun as Barnes tells the child to say ‘pow’, according to a statement on the Evansville Police Department website.
“At no point does Barnes try to stop the child from playing with the gun,” police said. Police did not specify if the gun was loaded or not.
The baby's mother, Toni Wilson, faces the same charges as her boyfriend after police determined she was present while the videos were being recorded.
When questioned, she claimed the gun was a pellet gun, police said.
