Clairvoyant jailed for conning clients

Jon Swaine New York

AN AMERICAN clairvoyant has been jailed for up to 15 years after conning customers out of tens of thousands of dollars, by promising to rid them of their problems.

Sylvia Mitchell promised vulnerable clients that she could rid them of "negative energy", and even of their obsession with money, if they wrote her cheques for large sums.

Mitchell, who lives in Mystic, Connecticut, was convicted of grand larceny, and sentenced to five to 15 years in jail.

She was also ordered to pay back money she received from customers at her shop in Greenwich Village, New York.

One client, Debra Saalfield, said she remortgaged her house after Mitchell told her that to "break her attachment to money" she should hand over $27,000 (€20,000). (©Daily Telegraph, London)
