Charles Manson's 25-year-old girlfriend has claimed that she and the notorious American serial killer are planning to marry.

The young woman, who calls herself "Star," said that she took her relationship with Manson "very seriously" and moved to be near his prison in California several years ago.

"I'll tell you straight up, Charlie and I are going to get married," she told Rolling Stone magazine. "When that will be, we don't know. But I take it very seriously. Charlie is my husband. Charlie told me to tell you this. We haven't told anybody about that."

Manson, 79, has been in prison for the past 44 years after being convicted of the murders of the actress Sharon Tate and Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, a couple living in Los Angeles.

According to California's prison rules, inmates may marry anyone except a fellow inmate in the same institution. Star recently cut an "X" into her forehead to mimic Manson's notorious swastika.

Her resemblance to Susan Atkins, a member of the Manson Family gang who was convicted of the murders alongside Manson and died in 2009, was described as "beyond striking" by Rolling Stone.

The 25-year-old, who is from Missouri, is said to have begun a written correspondence with Manson after becoming interested in his environmentalism. She began visiting him in prison when she was 19 and moved to be close to Corcoran state prison.

She now visits him for hours on Saturdays and Sundays. "People can think I'm crazy," she told the magazine. "But they don't know. This is what's right for me. This is what I was born for."

However Manson himself appeared to cast doubt on her claims of impending marriage. "That's a bunch of garbage," he said. "You know that, man. That's trash. We're just playing that for public consumption."
