A global manhunt was under way last night for a gay porn star who is suspected of murdering, dismembering and cannibalising a Chinese student in Montreal and then sending body parts to Canada's main political parties.

A senior French official said last night he was "sure" the man, identified as Luka Magnotta (29), a former model of gay magazines and burlesque performer in his native Toronto, had fled Canada for France.

There was also some indication he might travel from France to London, where he may have once briefly lived.

Mr Magnotta is believed to have filmed the killing and posted a 10-minute video on an internet gore site. The film reportedly shows him stabbing a naked man with an ice pick. He then reveals that he has already slit the other man's throat. He performs sexual acts on the corpse and cannibalises it with a knife and fork.

Canadian authorities last week made repeated attempts to take the video off the internet.

The dead man is believed to be Jun Lin (33), a Chinese student who may have been dating Mr Magnotta. Mr Lin had been reported missing and had not been seen since May 24.

The macabre tale began after police in Montreal on Tuesday found the torso of the victim, and severed limbs later arrived at political party offices.

Meanwhile, in Britain, 'The Sun' claimed two of its reporters had tracked down Mr Magnotta last year in connection with videos it got featuring the brutal killing of kittens.

It said it later got an email from a man it believed was Mr Magnotta, suggesting he would soon move on to killing humans. The newspaper said it told police about the man and the email. "I'll be back -- and this time the victims won't be animals," it said.

Mr Magnotta may be travelling in the guise of a woman, officials warned.
