TWO members of Irish band Bell X1 had a narrow escape when their bus burst into flames during their first US tour.

Singer Paul Noonan and guitarist Dave Geraghty were on board the coach with tour manager Lisa Tinley and friend Mike Abdow in the early hours of Saturday.

They smelt smoke and rushed out. Within seconds, the vehicle was engulfed in flames.

A fleet of fire engines was dispatched within three minutes, and arrived in the hotel car park near Boston around 3.30am. They battled the flames and eventually sliced the roof off the vehicle to release toxic black fumes. The blaze is believed to have started in a generator in the ventilation and air conditioning system.

Band members Brian Crosby, Dominic Phillips, and Tim O'Donovan were in the adjoining Hyatt Hotel in Medford.

Earlier, the band made its North American debut with a sell-out gig in Cambridge, just outside Boston.

They have been left with a bill of around €32,000 after the fire.
