A HOUSE painter who had half his skull broken in during a brutal bar attack has been awarded $58m by a jury.

Antonio Lopez Chaj (43) from Los Angeles was left so badly brain damaged he can no longer speak after the brutal beating in mid-Wilshire, California.

Mr Chaj was beaten by a security guard with a baton, kicked in the head eight times and had his skull smashed against a pavement four times, leaving him with a horrendous chunk of his skull permanently smashed in.

It is understood that one of his relatives had got into a dispute with a bartender-manager at the bar in 2010 when violence erupted and the security guard began kicking and beating members of the group.

According to police Mr Chaj then tried to intervene in the attack when he was set upon by the security guard.

Mr Chaj appeared in court yesterday alongside his lawyers, who announced the award handed down against a security company in the Torrance Superior Court.
