A suspected poacher has been killed and partially eaten by a pack of lions near a South African national Park.

The man's remains were discovered in a private game park near Kruger National Park on Saturday.

It was initially believed the deceased man was an employee at the park.

However police are now investigating if the man was a poacher in the park to hunt. According to Sky News a loaded rifle was found nearby.

"It seems the victim was poaching in the game park when he was attacked and killed by lions," police spokesman Moatshe Ngoepe told AFP.

"They ate his body, nearly all of it, and just left his head and some remains."

Work is underway to identify the victim.
