A drive to encourage Egyptians to have smaller families has been launched as the country's population heads towards 100 million.

Rural couples traditionally have large families, but the government has started the 'Two is enough' campaign because of fears over the shortage of water resources and employment. The population is growing by 2.6 million a year.

"We need to really control this population growth so that people can feel the benefits of development," said Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Wali.
