Obama won't back ousted leader

THE US has refused to support the Central African Republic's recently ousted leader and declined to call the overthrow of Francois Bozize a coup, part of an effort to rescue a political agreement to restore calm to the impoverished nation.

A spokesman said the US has no information concerning Mr Bozize's whereabouts or intentions, despite the claim by Cameroon that the former military chief was seeking "temporary" refuge in its territory.

The rebels' weekend invasion of the capital, Bangui, came two months after they signed a peace deal that would have let Mr Bozize (66) serve until 2016.
