Car bomb explodes outside luxury hotel in Tripoli

A car bomb has exploded outside a luxury hotel in Tripoli, a Libyan security official said.

The official said the blast outside the Corinthia hotel early this morning rocked the old city area of the capital. He gave no further details.

Tripoli has been hit by series of car bombs and shooting incidents. Most recently a guard was killed in a shootout outside the UN headquarters.

Since the ousting and killing of Libyan dictator Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, the country has been torn between competing militias and tribes vying for power.

Libya's post-Gaddafi transition has collapsed, with two rival governments and parliaments - each backed by different militias - ruling in the country's eastern and western regions.
