MICHELLE Obama's keenly-awaited inauguration outfit 2013 was upstaged by her brand new hair-do and her fashionable eldest daughter.

Malia Obama (14) stood out like a beacon on Capitol Hill in an eye-catching magenta wool coat and a burgundy snood.

Beside her, Michelle's 'fit and flare' navy coat by US designer Thom Browne faded into the sea of dark suits and overcoats.

Famous for her dynamic use of show-stopping colour, Michelle's choice for her husband's presidential inauguration was beautifully tailored but remarkably subdued.

Michelle has been a fashionable FLOTUS over the last four years, taller and more curvy than precedessors and a champion for the lesser known designers.

Four years ago, she sent fashion writers running for their colour swatches when she arrived at Mr Obama's first inauguration on Capitol Hill in an Isabel Toledo outfit. Was it green? Was it yellow? No, it was lemongrass – which became a new colour on women's radar.

Michelle caught her fashion stalkers by surprise by wearing navy two days running. Yesterday it was a high necked, button-less, flat fronted coat with matching dress, Sunday saw her wear a Reed Krakoff shift dress and cashmere cardigan.

Michelle was happy to push party politics aside. The coat designer's brother Pat Browne is a Republican in the Pennsylvania State Senate – and the coat had all the hallmarks of a designer who has excelled at menswear including stints at Brooks Brothers and Ralph Lauren.

The necktie-inspired coat may have been custom made, but she went to her old stomping ground, American high street store J Crew for her bejewelled belt and cerise leather gloves. Indeed, her daughter's coats were not new for the occasion and it was J Crew for Malia and Kate Spade for Sasha.

However, the real stand-out star of her inauguration look was her new 49th birthday haircut which debuted the fringe.
