Lionel Richie says he loves being a grandfather - because he can hand the children back.
The 61-year-old crooner helps look after adopted daughter Nicole and her fiance Joel Madden's two-year-old daughter Harlow and son Sparrow, who turns one this month.
But Lionel's more than happy to return his grandchildren at the end of the day, saying: "It is probably the wildest thing I've ever experienced in my life because I get to play with the kids, I know what's going to happen and then when it does happen, I give them back to Nicole and Joel - what a great thing!"
He said: "Now I understand why my mum and dad were smiling so much when I had the kids because I get it. I can say, 'Here, I think she needs changing'. It's the best of both worlds."
Lionel - who refers to his grandchildren as "mice people", said: "Sparrow - who I call Hawk - he's coming along so I've got to be there for the day he walks. We're getting close."
The multi-million selling musician added that he doesn't have much time to himself.
"Between that and my spare time, and then of course touring in 2011, ... I'm getting in all my fun now," he quipped.
