Hannibal producer Bryan Fuller told fans at Comic-Con that his star Mads Mikkelsen "wanted to play Satan".

Mads, who plays Dr Hannibal Lecter in the hit TV show, was keen to make the character his own, reported Deadline.

Bryan said: "He said he didn't want to play Anthony Hopkins or Brian Cox. He wanted to play Satan."

Executive producer Bryan revealed some of his bizarre dealings with channel executives over the horror series to Comic-Con audiences.

He explained: "We had two people who were nude and we saw their buttocks. They were dead, they were flayed open, and cracked in many ways.

"Their butt crack was the least offensive of the ones they were sporting, [but] the network said no... I asked why, because of the exposed spine and muscle tissue and flayed skin? I said, 'What if we fill the butt cracks with blood so you can't see them?' They said OK."

The second series will start with a two-part episode and a trial in the third instalment for FBI investigator Will Graham (Hugh Dancy), accused of murder at the end of the first series.

Director David Slade teased fans at the convention with his plans for Hannibal further down the line. He talked about the Thomas Harris book Red Dragon which all Dr Hannibal Lecter spin-offs are based on, saying he said he would love to include the book's real ending in filming as the show progresses.
