Demi Lovato has admitted she fears she could "spiral out of control" if she were to have an alcoholic drink.

The X Factor USA judge - who has suffered from bulimia, self-harming and depression and ended up in rehab in 2010 - revealed she can't indulge in a recreational tipple because she doesn't want to fall back into her old ways.

"Some people can smoke and drink recreationally. I'm not one of those people. If I do that, it will spiral out of control very quickly. I've lost the privilege of being able to drink responsibly," she told OK! magazine.

The 21-year-old Neon Lights singer confessed it was hard to stay on the straight and narrow when her dad Patrick died in June, but that she decided to "stay strong".

Demi - who also recently opened up about her cocaine addiction - said: "I worked so hard on my sobriety - I wasn't going to give it up.

"When I feel like I want to give up I think to myself, 'No, what about the 17-year-old girl that's been free of self-harming for nine months?' If I give up my sobriety, that would mean it would be OK for her to go back to self-harming."

Earlier this month Demi spoke out about her previous drug problems, telling Access Hollywood: "I couldn't go 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and I would bring it on airplanes. I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep and I would do it right there. I'd sneak to the bathroom and I'd do it."
