Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's Vogue cover may have not lived up to expectations.

Last month it was reported that the controversial cover, featuring the rapper with his arms around Kim, could break records.

It was tipped to become the highest-selling edition of the magazine, eclipsing top-sellers featuring Beyonce and US First Lady Michelle Obama.

But The New York Post said that early sales figures indicate the mag, which featured Kim in a strapless wedding dress, fell below initial estimates.

"The trends for Kim K are definitely better than the prior month with Rihanna, to the tune of 20 per cent better," said Josh Gary, vice president at Mag Net Data.

"I'd argue that if you peg last year's Michelle Obama at 269,000, this issue will net out around 250,000."

The New York Post said that in the first half of 2013, Vogue sold on average 269,740 copies a month at newsstands.

Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar was among those who were unimpressed by the decision to put the socialite and reality TV star on the cover of the fashion bible, tweeting: "Well... I guess I'm cancelling my Vogue subscription. Who is with me???"

When supermodel Naomi Campbell was asked about the issue, she appeared not to give it her endorsement, bursting into giggles and initially refusing to answer.

"I'm a fashion model and I've been working for 28 years, and when you get a Vogue cover, it's a build in your career," she said. "It's a stepping-stone to achieve that. And I'm a fashion model, what more can I say?"

Vogue editor Anna Wintour defended her decision, calling the image "charming and touching" and saying of reports that Kanye "begged" her to put his fiancee on the cover: "He did nothing of the sort."

Vogue spokeswoman Hildy Kuryk said: "We never comment on sales figures."
