Johnny Depp is impressed by his fiancée’s “sharp” mind.

The 50-year-old Dark Shadows actor is currently engaged to wed fellow actress Amber Heard, 27.

Although Johnny is 20 years her senior, he believes her wisdom outshines his in multiple ways.

"She's a wonderful girl," Johnny told Today’s Savannah Guthrie in an interview that will air on Friday.

“She's sharp as a tack. A Southern belle and sweet as can be, and very good for me."

The couple threw a lavish engagement party for friends and family at Carondelet House in Los Angeles last month, after Amber was spotted on numerous occasions wearing a sparkler on her ring finger.

Earlier this week when Johnny arrived in Beijing donning a band on his ring finger, a reporter asked him if the jewellery confirmed rumours he is betrothed.

"You can take that anyway you like, absolutely," Johnny replied.

"The fact that I'm wearing a chick's ring on my finger is probably a dead giveaway. Not very subtle."

Amber’s father David Heard is particularly elated about his little girl’s impending union with the Pirates of the Caribbean actor.

The patriarch believes Johnny is an excellent match for his daughter.

"I'm so pleased that he's in our family. The age difference makes him a bit closer to my age, so we get on great. We have a lot of fun together, and he takes good care of my daughter, so what more could I ask for? He's good for her and does the right thing by her," David previously gushed to British magazine Grazia.
