Joe McFadden has signed up to star in Holby City.

The Scottish actor - who previously made an appearance in Holby spin-off show Casualty - will play Raffaello 'Raf' di Lucca, an ambitious and unconventional registrar, who specialises in cutting edge resuscitation techniques to bring patients back from the brink of death.

Heartbeat star Joe said: "I'm absolutely thrilled to be joining the cast of such a successful show and becoming part of the staff at Holby City. I'm looking forward to scrubbing in and showing off Raf's innovative lifesaving skills!"

Also joining Holby is Petra Letang - who played Sonya Fowler's lesbian lover Naomi Julien in EastEnders between 2005 and 2007. She has been cast as Adele Effanga, the mischievous younger sister of registrar Mo.

Producers have also announced that David Ames will be returning as trainee Dominic Copeland, who was last seen leaving Holby in shame after jeopardising the career of colleague and mentor Antoine Malick.

The new castings are part of ongoing changes on the show, including the arrival of Coronations Street's John Michie as the new head neurosurgeon.
