Joan Rivers has stormed out of a TV interview live on air after becoming offended by a CNN presenter's line of questioning.

The veteran comedienne started out by defending her often cutting comments as presenter of E! show Fashion Police in the interview with Fredricka Whitfield.

According to E! she said: "It's not mean. I tell the truth. I'm sure I say the same things that all your viewers say to their friends sitting next to them on the couch. We're one of the few shows that says 'That's an ugly dress' and that's OK."

Answering a question about making jokes on subjects that are off limits in her routines, she said: "Life is very tough, and if you can make something easier and funny do it. I don't know what your life has been like but I know a lot of people who have gone through hell... Winston Churchill said if you make someone laugh, you give them a vacation. And maybe you take the worst thing in the world, make it funny and give them a vacation from horror."

Things turned sour when Fredricka asked her about wearing fur on the cover of her new book, Diary Of A Mad Diva, which she suggested Joan must have known would anger Peta protesters.

Joan fumed: "This whole interview is becoming a defence interview. Are you wearing leather shoes? Shut up. You're eating meat, you're eating chicken. Come to me when you're wearing a paper belt."

She then announced she was ending the interview, as a confused Fredricka seemed unsure whether she was joking until she walked out.

Joan said: "I'm going, because all you've done is negative. I've made people laugh for 50 years. I am put on earth to make people laugh, my book is funny, I wear fur that was killed 15 years ago, I work for animal rights... you are not the person to interview someone that does humour. Sorry."
