Teen Wolf star Tyler Hoechlin says he's got "no regrets" about missing out on Robert Pattinson's Twilight role.

The 23-year-old, who made the shortlist for the part of vampire Edward Cullen, insists fate intervened to bring him a different supernatural casting.

"My family has told me for years that I would have to play a werewolf and it happened sooner than later", the young star, who plays Derek Hale on the TV show, admitted at its Hollywood launch party.

"[It] kind of feels like it was bound to happen, right?" he laughed.

"Twilight was a situation that I had an opportunity that didn't go further, but no regrets, I'm happy to be a part of this now," he insisted.

He added: "I'm happy for all their success, hopefully we can follow in their footsteps."

The re-imagining of Michael J Fox's 80's classic promises to be darker and scarier than the original with its comedy transformations.

"[There are] a lot of breaking bones, changing of the face, fangs and a little bit of hair - not a lot though", Tyler revealed.

The actor says perfecting his howl took quite a bit of practise, revealing: "[I spent] a lot of time in front of the mirror, you put the fangs in and see what works."

Teen Wolf begins Thursday 7th July at 9pm on Sky Living
