Jared Leto caused a few raised eyebrows last night with the striking lack of his own.

The 40-year-old actor was at the 22nd Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York City, which was also attended by Matt Damon, Lara Stone, Emily Blunt and other celebrities.

Jared’s lack of eyebrows is for his role in his new film, The Dallas Buyers Club, which seems him play a HIV-positive transvestite.

Matthew McConaughey also stars in the film and has undergone a similarly dramatic physical change, having lost 30 lb to play an AIDS patient.

Last night Jared was celebrating as he picked up an award for his documentary film, Artifact, which is about the making of making of his band 30 Seconds to Mars' album This Is War.

Earlier this month the actor showed his dedication to his craft and posted pictures on Twitter of getting the waxing process done.

He tweeted: Ladies, I feel your pain. What I have learned today: Beauty is pain. Wax on wax off.”

He shared a photograph of his eyebrows being waxed and then another of the wax strips with hair attached.

He wrote: “Oh [bleep], there go the eyebrows!!!' he wrote.

He also shared a photo of his sore-looking armpit and revealed that had his legs waxed too in preparation for his role.

He tweeted: “I just waxed my just waxed my legs for this new role. Time to get into character. Pluck pluck pluck. Filming this week.”

The actor - who first shot to fame playing Jordan Catalano, alongside Claire Danes in the hit Nineties TV series, My So Called Life – was recently linked to Scarlett Johansson.

The pair, who dated in 2004, were spotted holding hands at the National Democratic Convention, in September. However, Scarlett has been more recently linked with French journalist Romain Dauriac
