Colin Farrell set to star in Mary Poppins film with Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson

The Irish actor has been cast in the new Mary Poppins film called ‘Saving Mr Banks’.

The Disney film tells the true story about the makings of the 1964 film, ‘Mary Poppins’, which starred Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke and won five Oscars.

Walt Disney became engaged in a 14-year battle with the ‘Mary Poppins’ author, PL Travers to try and persuade the Australian to sell the rights to her story about the nanny.

Colin is to play Travers’ father, who died when the author was seven and who inspired the character of Mr George Banks in ‘Mary Poppins.’

Tom Hanks will take on the role of Walt Disney while Emma Thompson is set to star as the author PL Travers. Filming will begin later this year.

Colin spent Father's Day yesterday in Philadelphia where he is filming 'Dead Man Down' with his two year old son Henry.

He was photographed carrying the tot into their hotel after an exhausting day visiting the sights of the city. The boy's mother is Polish actress Alicja Bachleda, whim Colin met while filming in Cork two years ago.

The couple have since split but the Castleknock man is anxious to spend as much time with Henry and his older son James who has the rare condition Angelman Syndrome.
