Sir Kenneth Branagh is to make his New York stage debut in a production of Macbeth put on inside a huge restored army base in the US city.

The Wallander star will reprise his role from the production at this year's Manchester International Festival, with co-star Alex Kingston also returning as Lady Macbeth.

The production was originally staged in a deconsecrated church in Manchester and marked Sir Kenneth's return to Shakespeare after more than a decade.

The US version will be performed in the 55,000 sq ft Wade Thompson Drill Hall, which is part of the Park Avenue Armory, next June.

Sir Kenneth said: "Utilising the possibilities of the vast open space is a truly exciting prospect. I am delighted that we have the chance to recreate Macbeth in this epic setting."

Alex Poots, who is artistic director at the Manchester Festival and holds the same role at the Armory, said: "We are thrilled that Kenneth Branagh will be coming to the Armory to recreate this iconic role following his performance in Manchester this summer.

"And I am particularly excited that this production will mark his New York stage debut."
