The heatwave is officially here.

Slather on the suncream as today is set to be the hottest day of the year, with the mercury set to hit 25 degrees.

And if you're looking for the sunniest spots, the midlands and Leinster are expected to get the best of the summer weather.

"Thursday will definitely be the best day of the week," Met Éireann forecaster Klara Finkele declared earlier this week.

Sun-worshippers have already been smiling this week as Ireland has already experienced hotter temperatures than parts of Portugal, Fiji, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Bermuda and Malta.

But the advice is to enjoy the warm weather while it lasts, as Friday will become cloudy again, with some rain and showers in the west which will move eastwards to the rest of the country overnight.

There will be showers on Saturday, but the east of the country looks like it may get the best of the weather with a "hit-and-miss" chance of showers for Guns N' Roses concert goers in Slane.

On Sunday, thundery conditions are threatened. Temperatures will become somewhat cooler with the chance of some heavy showers.

Rain will be most likely in the west and north.
