Parts of the country will be hit by snow and sleet tonight and tomorrow, Met Eireann has said.

Scattered showers of rain, sleet, and snow will mainly affect parts of the North and Northwest tonight.

There have been reports of snow in Mayo and Knock tonight, while unofficial reports of snow say there is also snow in Sligo and Donegal.

Forecaster Siobhan Ryan told independent.ie: “There’s a blast of cold air tonight. It’ll be breezy enough, with frost and ice.”

“There will be wintry showers around, and it’ll be windy on the west and southwest coasts. And there could still be a few thundery showers overnight.”

“The majority of the wintry showers will be in Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim and Mayo. A light dusting of snow is possible on higher ground.”

Tomorrow, temperatures are expected to be between four to eight degrees.

"There’ll be sunny spells and scattered showers, with the vast majority of the showers affecting the likes of Connacht and Ulster. There is a risk of wintry showers, mainly for higher ground,” Ms Ryan said.

“Sunday will see milder temperatures at around 10 degrees. Atlantic fronts will break through with dull, windy and wet conditions. It looks like it’ll be quite a miserable day.”
