A code orange weather warning has been put in place this evening as heavy thunderstorms with torrential downpours locally and spot flooding are forecast.

The mild and humid weather will remain as heavy storms are expected to hit the western half of the country, with mist and fog patches in places.

It will remain dry in eastern and north-eastern parts with sunny spells, Met Eireann report.

Counties affected include Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath and Donegal.

But it’s not back to the stereotypical Irish weather just yet as showers are expected to largely die out by early tonight.

The weather warning will be in place until 10pm this evening.

The sun will return tomorrow morning and it will be dry and sunny in most areas.

Heavy and thundery showers will develop in the west again tomorrow afternoon and evening, but it will remain very warm and humid.

Temperatures are forecast to hit as high as 27 degrees Celsius.
